valley fair after that shooting. the mall did not reopen until saturday. all three victims are expected to be okay. let's go to bring in our damian trujillo live in san jose for us today. damien. such a tense, horrifying night for thousands of holiday shoppers there. but you caught up with the san jose family that helped calm some nerves, i understand. yeah, the garcia family lives just a few houses down from the east side of the valley fair mall, and two girls ran up to the door and rang the doorbell. the ring camera caught a lot of this on video, and they said, there's been a shooting at the mall. can we come in? can we come in, please? the man, martin garcia, allowed them into the house. and then behind him were dozens of other people who were also fleeing from what had happened at valley fair mall. and he says, everybody come in, everybody come in. he had just under 50 people inside his home. he said, for as long as five hours, some of them because some of them had their cars parked in the garage at valley
4:34 pm
fair, and police were not allowing anyone to go into that garage because they were still conducting their investigation. so they sat there for that many hours, tense moments. at first it kind of barricaded themselves at the beginning, inside the garcia family home, and then when things started calming down a little bit, then they ordered pizza. they made they put on cartoons for a couple of little girls who were there because they had gone to valley fair to celebrate a birthday at the hello kitty store there at the mall. and so they wanted to make sure that they were kind of distracted from all the chaos and kind of focused in on more kid friendly things. and so they put on cartoons for them. but just an overwhelming show of of human kindness by the garcia family just outside of valley fair mall. you got that right, damien? absolutely. around 50 people taken into his home. i understand you got to speak with one of those families that was being hosted during that scary time. what did they tell you? yeah, we spoke with two of them, actually, miss tang and miss johnson. they came from san francisco for that hello kitty party. and miss johnson
4:35 pm
told me that it seemed like martin garcia was an angel to them. he opened his arms and said, come into my home. and he says, it's like opening the wings of an angel. so they they became friends. they're going to communicate from now on because of the bond that they created when they were sheltered in the garcia family home. a lot of those families very, very grateful that they opened their doors for that many, that amount of time. while chaos was going on at the mall just down the street, opened the doors, ordered pizza, watch tv. incredible. damian, looking forward to your full story at 6:00. thanks for that preview. the fbi is hoping a $50,000 reward will bring in tips that lead investigators to those who are responsible for a deadly mass shooting at a kid's birthday party in stockton. this happened saturday night that left four people dead, including three children. 11 others were wounded, a family member tells nbc. bay area
4:36 pm
partygoers were just getting ready to cut the birthday cake when three masked people walked into the banquet hall and opened fire. like i said, my mom said she just threw the cake off the table, flipped the table over, and used it as a shield. a gofundme page has identified one of the young victims as 14 year old amari peterson. the other three victims were eight, nine and 21 years old. the los gatos community is rallying around a popular coffee shop that is still picking up the pieces, after a car crashed through his front door. this happened on thanksgiving. the car plowed straight into the los gatos coffee roasting company on main street. a local city newspaper has so far raised nearly $11,000 via gofundme page to help support employees during the shop's unexpected closure. money collected will also cover reconstruction costs not covered by insurance, and police say the 90 year old driver involved will survive

his injuries. investigators say alcohol appears to have played a role in that crash, but they are still looking into an exact cause. san francisco is celebrating a milestone of sorts. today marks the fifth year of its street crisis response team. the city held a ceremony for the team and presented a certificate of honor to mayor daniel lurie program was launched as an alternative to police response. instead of a police response to a mental health crisis. highly trained teams are dispatched. the program started with just two units. there are now 12 covering the entire city. today, fire chief dean christian praised the team for its dedication and compassion. i've seen the dedication they have to one another, their ability to de-escalate a situation together with the plan where they potentially could be in danger, making sure that they both go home safe. last year alone, the san francisco street crisis teams were dispatched 20,000 times, and chief crispin
4:38 pm
says departments from across the country have reached out to san francisco to figure out how to set up similar programs. it is a multibillion dollar day for online retailers, and on the cyber monday, we are getting a look behind the curtain. amazon's delivery station in fremont is working through a big spike in orders, as you can imagine, which is why 350 employees are working around the clock to make sure the packages reach your home on schedule. that's what amazon is telling us. and this is the last stop before they're loaded onto trucks and delivered to you. so we'll receive 100,000 packages today and we'll sort them down to zip code and then down to the street level. and then we help our drivers load those up in the vans, and then they hit the road and get them to your doorstep. amazon site manager says since black friday, the fremont delivery station is processing nearly double the number of packages it usually delivers. amazon says it hired an additional 200 seasonal workers just in fremont to handle the holiday surge. and if you're going to have the
4:39 pm
super bowl in silicon valley, you better have the latest tech, right? and that's exactly what's happening for the big game at levi's stadium. so let's go ahead and bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. scott, you got a behind the scenes look i understand at the tech. yeah. you know we're talking about a lot of televisions audrey. and it's funny you mentioned black friday and you talk about cyber monday and the big shopping season. that's one reason a lot of people shop for televisions. but the number one reason that people upgrade is because they're having a super bowl party. and so this is a big time of year for a whole lot of reasons to upgrade your television. one of the companies in san francisco is dolby labs. you probably know them from the movies. they're also inside a whole lot of televisions. they make a lot of technology for the color and the sound of it all and everything that comes not only from the big screen in the theater, but now your tv. and even this year there are some upgrades, and those upgrades get into the televisions that people buy this year and in the coming weeks leading up to the big game in february. okay, of course the tvs, you need the
4:40 pm
big ones, but some people, they're okay with the smaller screens like their phones. are they addressing that at all? they do, you know, and one of the interesting things is everybody of a certain age and you all know who you are, will double screen it, right? you're watching television and you're on your phone at the same time. and this is perfect for live events like the super bowl. you're watching it live, but you're also communicating to your friends. you've got the text chat going, all that stuff. and one thing that happens when this happens, whether it's the super bowl or fantasy football, is people go nuts because of delays. there's a little latency between i mean, you may live in the same neighborhood as me, but you'll still see because of whatever reason, the play before i do and maybe text me about it and i'm like, wait, what do you mean? that was bad? so actually, dolby has some technology that's working to try to cut down on the latency between tv sets, between cable systems, between neighborhoods, all of that stuff so that when your second screen it, you are up to date, whether with your fantasy football league or with your neighbors and friends who are watching the super bowl that's coming out here soon as
4:41 pm
well. so all sorts of little tweaks that they work on in the lab there in san francisco, where we were earlier today, to make the tv that you're watching and your live experience watching things like the super bowl a little bit better. so it's kind of interesting to know that there's some technology going on behind the scenes to try to make that more fun and more up to the absolute nanosecond that you're watching the action. okay, you're talking about up to the nanosecond, very specific. so i'm guessing, you know, with these changes it's going to be expensive. you know, it's funny, the one thing that has really dropped in price i mean, we've talked about this with computers and things like that. television sets have dropped in price in 25 years, where inflation has gone up quite a bit, the size of a quarter, the price of a 40 inch television set is down 99% in 2025 years. so this is something that has not only beaten inflation but beaten it badly. you can still spend, believe me, a lot of money on a home system. if you want all the soundbars and speakers and a big screen and all that stuff,
4:42 pm
but you can also get a good set for pretty cheap. and one of the things they're trying to do with technology is get it so that there is a uniform set for everybody where, yeah, you can go nuts on the sound and all the bells and whistles, but you can also get a decent tv set to watch the super bowl, whatever you're into for not all that much money. and it is amazing when you think about, even in the last couple of decades, how much prices of tvs have actually dropped. okay, well, perfect time to talk about this. it's the holiday season. maybe it could be a good present. we have one, two more months before this. exactly. yeah, before the big game. all right scott thanks so much. appreciate it. and nbc bay area is your home for the super bowl. you can watch the game sunday, february 6th right here on nbc. bay area stepped up safety for bart riders from new fare gates to added patrols. we are hearing from the bart police chief on what the public transit agency is doing to make your ride as safe and smooth as possible this holiday season, also honoring lives lost and

on baden and magnolia avenues. witnesses say firefighters pulled one person from the apartment and that person died at the scene. the fire department confirms the coroner was called to the scene, and a witness also told us more than one person lives in that apartment. but what's weird is there's 2 or 3 people that live in that apartment, and there's
4:46 pm
one guy died, but we don't know where the other two people are at now, which is kind of weird. nearby buildings were evacuated while crews put out that fire. investigators are still trying to determine a cause for the fire. you can expect to see more police officers riding your next bart train. it's all part of the transit agency's plan to ensure riders feel safe this holiday season. agency says it's upping patrols on all trains and all 50 stations. we did speak to bart police chief this morning. he says bart has been rolling out new strategies all year, and that those strategies have helped bring crime rates down. agency says the changes may be most noticeable in san francisco. the san francisco stations are showing a lot of progress, and i think that is the result of really collaborating with all our partners and having the bart focus entirely on safe and clean. chief franklin says the new fare gates have also helped. agency says overall crime is down 45% on the rails, with violent crime dropping 32%

compared to last year. the agency says it's also deploying more crisis specialists and fare inspectors. oakland will be the latest bay area city watching out for speeding drivers with new cameras. city plans to start installing automated speed cameras in 18 spots across the city. they can detect cars going at least 11mph over the posted speed limit. those cameras will then snap the license plate and mail a ticket to the owner. program target streets that see 60% of the city's worst crashes. cameras go online in january, but citations won't begin until spring. depending on the speed, fines range from $50 to $500, which are the amounts set by state law. meanwhile, the grace period for solo drivers with clean air vehicle stickers is over today, so that means a lot of drivers will be merging right into the main lanes of traffic, or they'll be paying fastrak tolls to stay in the carpool lane. california's incentive program to encourage drivers to go electric started

back in 1999. it was very popular with about a million stickers issued, but the trump administration hit the brakes on that program. a violation will cost you $490. ceremonies were held all over the nation today to commemorate world aids day, and today we want to highlight ruth brinker, a retired san francisco food service worker. 40 years ago, she started cooking meals in her own kitchen to deliver to those who had fallen ill and were unable to feed themselves. that effort turned into the nonprofit project open hand, which celebrates its 40th anniversary today on world aids day. project open hand now serves more than 2500 medically tailored meals a day, as well as groceries to hundreds of patients. the ceo says medical treatments for hiv and aids have advanced over time and so has nutrition. really, our mission hasn't changed, but i will say that our focus and attention to the evidence behind what we do has changed,
4:49 pm
and we really believe that it's important for us to to provide that information to people in a way that they can understand how peer reviewed science can be applied to make sure that the food is medicine, medically tailored meals and medically tailored groceries are available to people with other chronic health issues. last year, for the first time, fewer than half their clients have hiv. project open hand has expanded to serve those with heart disease, kidney disease and much more. it's a great program. it really is. all right. switching gears now, taking a look at our weather with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. it's chilly out there. i know, so cold. and i think everybody's done with the fog. it's just been so gloomy. on and off. we're going to talk more about what's happening with that fog in your microclimate forecast. you can see in san jose right now. yes, we did get a few breaks of sun this afternoon, but already the low clouds and fog. it's beginning to form back there
4:50 pm
against the hills. temperatures right now 55 degrees. winds are light out of the west northwest at five miles per hour. and we're going to be back down into the 40s as soon as 9:00 for the south bay over to the east bay, walnut creek, also an hour or two here of sun 50 degrees right now, winds out of the east at eight and 40s, coming in five, six and 7:00. so heaviest jacket tonight if you're headed anywhere. so let's take it to the current fog and visibility. and we've seen visibility down to a quarter mile in less on and off the past week and a half. right now it's really not that bad. but you can see how the low clouds here are developing this ground fog through the central valley, also reforming here through the east bay. so we're not clear of this fog just yet. you'll see as we head through tomorrow morning. it's going to be widespread here at 4:00 in the morning. so if you're an early commuter, four, five, even 6:00, watch out for more reduced visibility. but we do think we could get into some improvements as we head through about 7:00 and 8:00 tomorrow morning with some increased

suspect is a juvenile, but officials say the suspect was already on probation for carrying a loaded firearm in february of this year. police say this was gang related. the suspect seemed to perceive the intended victim was from a rival gang. that intended victim was an adult. there were two other victims who were bystanders. a second person has been arrested in this. a woman who had a stroller with a kid inside. officials say that person allowed and facilitated the suspect's escape. she has also been apprehended. both the police chief and mayor today talked about an issue once again front and center accountability for minors. i can't talk about the reality we keep seeing over and over again. young offenders with prior firearm arrests receiving little to no consequences, getting another gun and escalating their violence. and that appears to be the case here. i'm afraid that if we don't change the way our system holds young repeat offenders
